Background of the Study:
Climate change is a global phenomenon with profound impacts on rural communities, particularly in areas where agriculture is the primary livelihood. In Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, climate variability—marked by erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events—has significantly disrupted agricultural productivity and rural economies. The unpredictable climate conditions have led to reduced crop yields, increased incidences of crop failure, and a transformation in traditional farming practices (Olatunji, 2023). Rural communities, heavily dependent on agriculture, face economic hardships, food insecurity, and deteriorating living conditions. Inadequate adaptation strategies, limited access to modern farming techniques, and insufficient governmental support further compound the vulnerability of these communities (Akinola, 2024). Additionally, environmental degradation linked to climate change strains natural resources, prompting rural-urban migration and contributing to social challenges. This study aims to assess how climate change impacts the economic and social dimensions of rural life in Iseyin, investigating alterations in agricultural practices, resource availability, and community resilience. By examining these interrelated factors, the research seeks to inform policy decisions that will foster sustainable adaptation strategies and enhance the adaptive capacity of rural populations (Yusuf, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Rural communities in Iseyin face mounting challenges due to climate change. Erratic weather patterns and extreme climatic events have disrupted agricultural practices, reducing productivity and destabilizing rural economies (Balogun, 2023). This disruption has led to food insecurity, lower incomes, and increased vulnerability among farming households. The lack of effective adaptation strategies and modern agricultural technologies further limits the capacity of these communities to cope with environmental stressors (Solomon, 2024). As a result, the socio-economic fabric of the area is under strain, with significant long-term repercussions for rural livelihoods. This study examines the extent to which climate change has adversely affected rural livelihoods in Iseyin, aiming to provide evidence-based recommendations for sustainable adaptation strategies.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity in Iseyin.

  • To identify the key challenges faced by rural communities in adapting to climate change.

  • To propose sustainable strategies for enhancing rural livelihoods in the face of climate change.

Research Questions:

  • What are the major impacts of climate change on rural livelihoods in Iseyin?

  • How has climate change affected agricultural practices and resource availability?

  • What sustainable strategies can enhance the resilience of rural communities?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Climate change significantly reduces agricultural productivity in Iseyin.

  • Rural communities are inadequately prepared to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

  • Sustainable adaptation strategies can significantly improve rural livelihoods.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the profound impact of climate change on rural livelihoods in Iseyin. By identifying critical challenges and proposing adaptive strategies, the research offers valuable insights for policymakers and community leaders, aiming to foster resilience and sustainable development (Adewole, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of climate change on rural livelihoods in Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, with a focus on agricultural practices and community responses.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature and weather patterns, primarily due to human activities (Eze, 2023).

  • Rural Livelihoods: The means by which rural communities secure income and sustenance, largely dependent on agriculture (Adebisi, 2024).

  • Adaptation Strategies: Methods and practices used to adjust to the adverse impacts of climate change (Chukwu, 2023).
